Want to get fit and manage your weight? Enter for an event . . .
Early research into 'sports' events shows that they act as strong motivators for behaviour change that results in higher fitness levels and, if you want it, weight loss.
Research (based on a one-year pilot) into young people's activity levels prior to a runnng event, is being conducted over a further five years by the Institute of Youth Sport and Nova International. It is scientifically measuring activity levels and outcomes such as fitness levels and body fat percentages.
The pilot demonstrated that physcial activity can be increased to government-recommended levels by encouraging children to prepare for a special event such as a mass run.
Nova international, joint funders of the research programme, have mass runs across the UK and, through their new Great Activity Campaign, now offer the opportunity to challenge yourself by walking, swimming, and dancing too. For more, visit the Great Activity Programme .
